NDM: Sent messages

I know they've seen my message - so why haven't they replied?

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2017/mar/17/i-know-theyve-seen-my-message-so-why-havent-they-replied
Phone breakup woes

This article is about the issue people are facing on social media where they aren't getting replies even though messages have been sent. With messages sent to people, they will eventually have their message delivered to the recipient and its up to them to reply once they view it or the person who had sent the message will be aware that they have been ignored. This has become an issue as society are questioning their worth when they are ignored. These people sending messages never picture the other person doing something else keeping them occupied meaning they wouldn't be able to view messages. It has caused some people to protest against the actions of some social networking sites to remove the feature of turning off the 'read' option.

I believe these social networking websites may actually be under threat by some of these protesters if they want to take this further. This is because they may eventually decide to boycott these social networking sites that allow their family and friends to hide the fact that they don't want to speak to them. Perhaps the feature isn't that major to take away than to maintain so it would be ideal to remove the feature because after all if you want to ignore someone and do it discreetly then you have the option of not opening the message so it won't show you have viewed the message.

Identities and the wider media

1) The Factsheet discusses how identity is a complex subject. What does it suggest defines our identity?

Its based on a complex set of relationships but we can think of the idea of self'

2) Complete the task on page 2: suggest media texts that could reinforce that someone is non-mainstream; edgy; a pleasure seeker; fashionable; witty and fun; cutting-edge.

Non - mainstream - i used products and social media sites that I am actually interested
Edgy - i like blog posts on piercing, tattoos and edgy clothing. For example, they like ripped jeans.
Pleasure seeker - they search for joy in life for example, travelling or living life on the edge
Fashionable - they like magazines and the latest trends and stay up to date with gossip
Witty and fun - enjoy watching comedy shows
Cutting edge - up to date with social media

3) What examples are suggested for a case study on urban youth?

A case study like Jeremy Kyle
4) What does Hebdige argue with regards to youth culture?

Media theorist Richard Hebdige says that youth cultures show their resistance to the dominant culture through their style choices. Urban youth can show itself to be outside the mainstream by adopting the uniform that is feared by mainstream culture and they learn about this fear in the media representations.

5) What other theorists are referenced alongside Hebdige? How do they link to the issue of youth identity?

Acland claims that the media is what makes the representation of youth as deviants.
Perkins states that representations of the youth are created by though outside of the 'youth' group and is rather a reflection of the adult's fear of youths.

6) How can we link our Year 12 case study on Ill Manors to youth and identity? What specific examples from the case study could be used to discuss Hebdige’s theory that youth culture challenges mainstream culture and dominant ideologies?

Ill manors reinforces Hebdige's theory as the youths are constantly getting up to no good and reinforcing all of the typical stereotypes made of them. E.g being deviants. For example when the youth are getting into fights and dealing with drugs. Also in the Ill manors music video the youths are shown rioting the streets.
7) What does theorist David Gauntlett suggest regarding the media’s influence over the construction of identities?

He claims that the media have influence on identity construction and so the way the media stereotypes groups may become part of how individuals see themselves and media institutions are able to use this to sell their products.

8) Do you agree that Hebdige’s view that youth culture will always seek to resist mainstream culture and challenge dominant ideologies?

I disagree. I personally think that there will not be a big change of the behaviour of youths in this society they will always somehow reinforce the typical stereotypes made of them. I think that only a small percentage of the youth population will actually challenge these dominant ideologies.

NDM: Rupert Murdoch takeover

Rupert Murdoch unlikely to spin off Sky News in takeover battle

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2016/dec/13/rupert-murdoch-unlikely-to-spin-off-sky-news-in-takeover-battle
Sky News logo

Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox is not expected to offer Sky News as a regulatory pawn to secure an £11.2bn takeover of Britain’s largest pay-TV broadcaster. Under a previous acquisition attempt in 2011, Murdoch struck a deal to spin off the loss-making Sky News in a bid to appease concerns raised by Ofcom, the media industry watchdog. However, it is understood that Fox believes that the industry landscape has changed significantly since then and that there should be less concern over the impact of a deal on the diversity of viewpoints across the media.

I believed Rupert Murdoch wasn't going to do a spin off because he is still probably planning to buy Sky. There are current articles informing us on Murdoch's plans of taking over Sky so I doubt they would copy them.

NDM: company's performance in digital age

Sorrell: companies that offend good governance tend to perform better

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2017/mar/03/martin-sorrell-wpp-rupert-murdoch-fox-facebook-snap-forecast-2017
Rupert Murdoch

WPP’s Sir Martin Sorrell has said that companies with dominant shareholders or owners such as Rupert Murdoch’s Fox, Facebook and Snap that 'offend' good corporate governance practices take more risks and tend to perform better financially. He said this the day after Snapchat revealed its share price rise which is more than 44% on its first day of trading. He said that WPP has found over a decade of measuring brand valuations that when markets hit tough patches it is companies with dominant shareholders or owners that tend to continue to invest perform best. 'The strongest innovators and strongest brands generate the strongest total shareholder returns,' he said. Perhaps surprisingly, corporate structures that seem to offend customary good corporate governance may deliver better long-term results.

This article is how markets generally operate. I do believe companies with strong brands and dominant shareholders will survive through declines because they are able to provide funds that the highly skilled employees at Snapchat or Fox can use to innovate their product. This is why multinational corporations are difficult to compete with because they are constantly innovating making it hard for competitors to stand out.

NDM: Whistleblowers endangered

Whistleblowers endangered in digital age, says lawyers' report

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2017/feb/22/whistleblowers-need-greater-protection-digital-age-media-lawyers-say
Downloading data from a USB

According to a report by media lawyers whistleblowers need better legal protection because they are far easier to identify in the digital era and successive laws have undermined their status. The study was held at London University and they say journalists find it increasingly difficult to safeguard the anonymity of their sources due to the monitoring and interception of online and phone conversations. The warning follows the publication earlier this month of a Law Commision review on how to update the Official Secrets Act. It suggested that prison sentences for leaking official information could be significantly increased and dismissed the idea of introducing a public interest defence.

I believe this is a serious issue as the development of digital media has led to secure information being leaked very easily. This means that other information like a 'snitch' reporting to a journalist can be traced and this could lead to crime rates increasing. Especially if its on a larger scale where the whistleblower is from a rival country revealing their country's plans through a digital device, their life would definitely be in danger as the information can be traced.

NDM: Phone hacking

Phone hacking: lawyers seek access to Murdoch and Brooks email accounts

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2017/mar/09/phone-hacking-lawyers-seek-access-to-murdoch-and-brooks-deleted-emails
Lawyers have requested access to email accounts used by Rebekah Brooks and James Murdoch.

Lawyers have asked a court to grant access to email accounts used by James Murdoch and Rebekah Brooks in a bid to prove there was an attempt to cover up phone hacking at the News of the World and the Sun. A judge will decide whether the company email accounts used by executives and journalists can be searched for any discussion about the destruction or concealment of emails. The latest development in a civil action against the owners of the Sun and News of the World comes at a sensitive time for Murdoch, who is trying to oversee a bid by the company he runs, 21st Century Fox, to take full control of UK broadcaster Sky. A previous bid by Fox was abandoned amid public outcry over phone hacking.

I believe the both Murdoch and Brooks are doing something suspicious because it seems they are and have been for years in the authorities lime light. In the article it says the company was investigated back in 2010 and 2011 where they had deleted emails when police launched a criminal investigation. So there could be more to this story and the judge should allow lawyers to search the email accounts as it is likely they were doing something illegal. This also reflects badly on Rupert Murdoch as his son and business associate is being investigated by police.

NDM: White House and Russia vs FBI

White House asked FBI to deny reports linking Russia and Trump advisers

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/feb/24/white-house-asked-fbi-to-deny-reports-linking-russia-and-trump-advisers
White House chief of staff Reince Priebus speaks at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Thursday.

Donald Trump’s chief of staff asked the FBI to deny media reports that campaign advisers were frequently in touch with Russian intelligence agents during the election, a White House official has said. The FBI were content on knowing the truth and didn't want exaggerate a story. The New York Times reported that US agencies had intercepted phone calls last year between Russian intelligence officials and members of Trump’s 2016 campaign team.

This seems like a betrayal on the American people because for many years it has been believed that the two countries have been giant rivals. But now the president has been exposed communicating with Russia, it seems a little dodgy and wrong. This isn't the person American should want running their country.

NDM: Trump's media ban

Donald Trump's media ban inspires Cambodian attack on press freedom

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2017/feb/27/donald-trump-media-ban-inspires-cambodian-attack-on-press-freedom
Cambodia’s prime minister, Hun Sen

Less than 100 days into his presidency, Donald Trump is being cited by a corrupt and despotic regime to justify new restrictions on rights and freedoms. Cambodia’s council of ministers spokesman Phay Siphan vowed to 'crush' media entities that endanger the 'peace and security' of the kingdom, calling on all 'foreign agents' to self-censor or be shut down. He justified this threat by citing Trump’s recent expulsion of critical media outlets from a White House briefing.

This was going to happen at some point because Trump is viewed as aggressive and out of control and when this type of person has the access of social media its going to cause controversy. This is evident now with other countries deciding to form 'defensive mechanisms' to avoid human right violations being formed in their country.

NDM: UK news - Rupert Murdoch

UK news plurality and Fox-Sky merger

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2017/mar/05/uk-news-plurality-and-fox-sky-merger
Rupert Murdoch

This article is about the impact of the proposed Fox - Sky merge on UK news plurality. In particular, the merger will clearly result in a significant extension of Rupert Murdoch’s already substantial control over wholesale news provision via his newspaper titles and websites. We also note that the available data probably underestimates the reach of Sky news online via third party websites, and the wider agenda influence of News UK titles.

I believe Rupert Murdoch shouldn't have control of Sky as he would then have two large institutions that he can present his ideologies through. This means that audiences would be exposed to his beliefs and could get influenced by them as the hypodermic needle model suggests, audiences just take in news whilst agreeing with what is being presented.

NDM: Wiki bans Daily Mail

Wikipedia bans Daily Mail as 'unreliable' source

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/feb/08/wikipedia-bans-daily-mail-as-unreliable-source-for-website
Wikimedia Foundation office in San Francisco, US.

Wikipedia editors have voted to ban the Daily Mail as a source for the website in all but exceptional circumstances after deeming the news group 'generally unreliable'. The move is highly unusual for the online website, which rarely puts in place a blanket ban on publications and which still allows links to sources such as Kremlin backed news organisation Russia Today, and Fox News, both of which have raised concern among editors.

It has been the issue of fake news that has turned institutions into issues as pressure groups and Government force pressure on them. It has meant that users are becoming less gullible and begin to question the news they are given just like with the Daily Mail. Other institutions could be at risk of being pressured and facing consequences on their actions just like most social networking sites - Facebook noticeably.

NDM:Snapchat rising

Snapchat rising: is Facebook sized success the future for this youthful app

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/feb/02/snapchat-evan-spiegel-growth-facebook-ipo-analysis

Snapchat boasts 150m active daily users, but it has yet to turn its reach into a profitable business.

The value of the social networking site is between $20bn and $25bn which makes it one of the world's largest technology offerings in recent years. It was created back in September 2011 which is a selfie app that lets users take pictures of themselves once they have been viewed. Despite it's immediate success it quickly turned into a 'sexting app' which isn't a good representation of the application. At first people weren't sure of the purpose of the social networking website.

I believe that Snapchat has its differences to Facebook especially when considering the users of the application. It is a website that the younger generation use more which means that it would have differences to Facebook like the simplicity of the Snapchat compared to Facebook. Plus, as audiences become lazy and technology takes over, it seems Snapchat could potentially takeover Facebook as users like the easy methods of navigating the application.

NDM: Fake news

Fake news inquiry to review social networks' complaints procedures

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2017/mar/08/fake-news-inquiry-social-networks-complaints-policy-facebook
Facebook and other apps on a mobile phone

A parliamentary inquiry into fake news is to consider legislation forcing social networks to improve the way they handle complaints after Facebook’s failure to remove sexualised images of children. Damian Collins, chair of the culture, media and sport (CMS) committee, said Facebook’s failure to remove all the images reported, as part of a BBC investigation this week, was “disturbing” and suggested its complaints systems were inadequate. There will be the consideration of imposing new offences to ensure social networks are held responsible for inappropriate content which includes fakes news and images of children that have been reported.

I believe that Governments need to impose legislation's that would punish social networking sites for not dealing with issues on their websites if they have been reported. This is because they don't seem as fussed as the rest of the World with issues on fake news and exploitation of children.

NDM: Twitter finance

Twitter loses and revenue despite gaining 2 million users and Trump 'boost'

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/feb/09/twitter-loses-advertising-revenue-rise-users-shares
Donald Trump holding a mobile phone to his ear

Shares in Twitter have slumped after the social networking site faced a decline in advertising income despite the rise in user numbers because of Donald Trump's high profile tweeting helped to advertise the platform's influence. The San Francisco based company reported annual revenues up 14% on last year to $2.5bn with monthly active users climbing from 317 million to 319 million in the final quarter last year.

I believe Twitter is a social networking site that isn't viewed as very modern even though its located on the internet and has millions of young users. This is because of the subjects that are constantly associated with the site which is mainly politics with the prime example of the current President who is in use of the website. In contrast with another social media website like Instagram, we rarely hear of significant figures communicating through this social media and this is probably because of the age range of users. Overall, Twitter's decline is occurring because of the younger generation becoming less interested in it.

Murdoch's 21st Century Fox bid for Sky should be rejected, minister told.

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2017/mar/01/murdoch-21st-century-bid-for-sky-should-be-rejected-minister-told
Rupert Murdoch

Rupert Murdoch wants to take control of multinational corporation Sky with a bid. In a submission to the minister considering the bid, campaigners at the Media Reform Coalition and online activist network Avaaz argue that the overall market shares of both Murdoch-owned newspapers the Sun and the Times as well as Sky remain “materially unchanged” since 2011, when media regulator Ofcom raised concerns about a similar takeover. Fox is expected to formally notify the European competition regulator of its £11.7 billion for full control of Sky this week.

Snap Inc, the company behind disappearing messaging app Snapchat, has gone public with stocks soaring 44% on their first day of trading and valuing the company at $28bn. The market debut of the loss-making tech enterprise on Thursday catapulted its twentysomething co-founders Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy into the top tier of the tech billionaires. Shortly after the pair rang the opening bell on the New York Stock Exchange, the company’s share price rose 41% from its guide price of $17 a share to an opening price of $24.

Identities: applying feminism

1) What are the five types of feminism outlined on the first page of the Factsheet?

  • Radical feminism
  • Liberal feminism
  • Marxist-feminism
  • Black feminism
  • Post modern feminism

2) Which category would Judith Butler fit into? What about Angela McRobbie? Laura Bates and Everyday Sexism? Explain your answers.

Judith Butler - believes tradition feminists are WRONG to divide society into 'men' and 'women' and says gender is not biologically (Liberal feminist)

Angela McRobbie - highlights the empowering nature of magazines such as cosmopolitan and glamour, taking a different perspective to traditional feminist like radical (post modern feminism)

Laura Bates - she discusses the issues of feminism with the consideration of experiences of females who have been discriminated because of her gender (post modern feminism)

3) What was the difference between suffragists and suffragettes? Which approach do you agree with?

Suffragists (liberal feminist) - these were feminists from the 1897 and they protested peacefully, moderately and lawfully. Suffragettes (radical feminists) - these were feminists who didn't believe the NUWSS were progressing quick enough and decided to use aggressive antiques to persuade society women need equal rights.

4) What was Laura Mulvey's argument regarding Hollywood film? Do you agree with it? Why?

In 1975 Laura Mulvey argued that cinematography of Hollywood films objectifies women; the camera 'looks' at women as if were a male and the woman is a desirable sexual object. This is called the male gaze.I do believe Hollywood movies present women in this way by having her act as the 'princess' that needs to be saved by the 'hero'. She would then somehow end up in the arms of the hero who is the main character and it could be interpreted at this point of the film that she is the main character's trophy (objectification).

5) Watch this YouTube video extract on Jean Kilbourne's Killing Us Softly series and list five examples she gives of the media objectifying women:

  • Correlation between weight and marriage
  • 'Keep her where she belongs'
  • Photos of models half naked
  • Adverts of women linking to appearance
  • L'oreal advert

6) What is Killbourne's argument regarding the representation of women in advertising?

She believes women feel as if they must strive for perfection like the models in adverts otherwise they feel guilty and ashamed when they cannot achieve the absolute flawlessness they are being told is 'normal'.

7) What is Naomi Wolf's argument in The Beauty Myth?

Wolf claims that the notion of 'beauty' is entirely socially constructed and patriarchal. This means that men in a given society create rules of what is considered beautiful in women but this alters from culture to culture.

8) Why is the representation of women in music videos a controversial topic for feminists?

In the music genre of R&B and hip hop videos has been an area of contentious debate for feminists in recent years. Many feminists have looked at the lyrics and images used in these musical genres and there has been disagreement about whether the women portrayed are victims of patriarchal oppression or empowered female role models.

9) What is your view of female artists such as Nicki Minaj or Beyonce - do they empower women or reinforce sexist, patriarchal views?

Both of these artists reinforce sexist and patriarchal views because of the content they produce and portray. Their main theme in most of their music videos are about sex and seduction which would influence male audience's into objectifying women and females (usually young) who aspire the artists may copy their behaviours. So its both males and females that are effecting the progression of femininity because of the significant public figures in the music industry that can influence audiences. Also, audiences would probably associate Nicki Minaj's music and behaviour with Laura Mulvey's theory of the male gaze because males are forced to glare at her because of the way she is presented.

10) Has new and digital media given women an opportunity to challenge sexist views or is it simply another media platform for women to be oppressed? Explain your view.

New and digital media has already given women a voice to challenge sexist views. A movement like 'No More Page 3' has had a significant on society and the rights of women because they have put a stop to certain things. For example, they stopped The Sun from putting a young naked model on page 3 of The Sun through a movement that's headquarters is online. Furthermore, it has given more women the confidence to speak about their sexist experiences in society which could close the 'gap' between males and females. However due to public figures being every like a God, audiences are always at the risk of getting influenced by them. For example, young males from working class families would most likely be fans of hip hop and could copy the themes presented in the music videos. Therefore, would be prone to discriminating and objectifying women.

Thursday 2 March 2017

Identities and the media: feminism

1. What are the two texts the article focuses on?

It focuses on post feminist world which isn't a movement but is better described as the current set of assumptions in contemporary society and culture.

2. What examples are provided from the two texts of the 'male gaze' (Mulvey)?
culture

The theory can be applied to suggest that male audiences are still viewing women for pleasure reinforcing the 'male gaze' theory Mulvey has created. This is through the media text from Beyonce which is displayed as being seductive in her music video.

4) Do texts such as these show there is no longer a need for feminism or are they simply sexism in a different form?

These types of texts reinforce the need for feminism as female characters on screen are displayed ad being seductive and trying to be pleasurable for the male audience. So we aren't in a post feminism society where feminism isn't needed as its media texts like the one from the music video that are influencing males to objectify women.

5) Choose three words/phrases from the glossary of the article and write their definitions on your blog.

Third wave feminism - was a movement that redefined and encouraged women to be dominant and sexually assertive.
Patriarchy - an ideology that places men in a dominant position over women
Nostalgia - a sentimental longing for the past, often only remembering the positives of the time.

No More Page 3

1) Research the No More Page 3 campaign. Who started it and why?
It was started om the 23rd of January 2015, after two and half years of campaigning by No more page 3, the sun newspaper had stopped the feature showing pictures of topless women on its 3rd page.

The No More Page 3 campaign was started by Lucy-Anne Holmes who is an actress and author. She did this to prevent the issue of women being objectified in society and she did face problems from people along the way.

2) What reasons did the campaign give for why Page 3 had to go?

Its the most obvious reason which is the objectification of women. I do not agree with objectifying any person and page 3 did this by getting young models to get naked in front of a camera for the nation to see. Also, younger audiences reading/browsing The Sun newspaper would be exposed to soft pornography and this could lead to other issues like these same males becoming criminals through rape for example.

3) Read this debate in the Guardian regarding whether the campaign should be dropped. What are Barbara Ellen and Susan Boniface's contrasting opinions in the debate?

Barbara Ellen does agree with the campaign and women should stop getting exploited by the opportunity for fame. Whereas Susan Boniface doesn't agree with the campaign as she believes page 3 is actually empowering women.

4) The main campaign website has now been replaced by a site calledSexist News, designed to highlight sexism in the media. Give an example of a recent story the website has highlighted. Do you agree with the view of the website?

The article discusses the problems females face when deciding how to appear in certain situations and in the show they were presented with revealing clothes which many young audiences would expect to see. It has now been installed in the beliefs of young people that females should always dress to impress (males) reinforcing the male gaze theory.

5) How can the No More Page 3 campaign and Sexist News website be linked to the idea of post-feminism?

The No More Page 3 campaign and the article that I was reading from the Sexist News website it seems the two websites are similar and share the same views. They both believe that they shouldn't being showing too much of their own skin and should respect their bodies. This does link to the idea of post feminism because these websites would suggest feminism needs to exist because of the examples they have on their websites like the way Little Mix were dressed on X Factor - a show with millions of viewers.

6) What are your OWN views on these campaigns? Do you agree with their aims? Is there still a need for these campaigns in the media?

The campaigns are doing too much to change society in my opinion. This is because just as women dress to impress males, we see males do the same thing through the different ways they are presented on television. For example, just like a girl group from X Factor would be dressed half nakedly, a male group would do the same showing off their bodies reinforcing the female gaze and so both genders are being objectified. The campaign isn't having a fast enough impact to affect society like they want to because even without 'Page 3' there are millions of other sources where audiences can view naked women.

7) Finally, do you agree that we are in a post-feminist state or is there still a need for feminism?

Yes, we have progressed to the post feminism state because the equality of women is getting greater but there are some things males do that females can't and vice versa so we shouldn't look to change that.

4. Go back to your favourite film (as identified in the lesson). What does this choice of film say about your identity? Are there any identities within the film (e.g. certain characters) that particularly resonated with your values and beliefs?

Training day - this film is about corrupt police who constantly are displayed exploiting the public. This choice of film would suggest I am interested in action and violence from media texts and possibly real life. This is because of the way characters are presented in the film with the constant use of guns, violence and drugs. Denzel Washington plays the role of the corrupt police man and he is portrayed as being cold blooded. Usually I enjoy his character in films but in this film I kind of swayed towards the other cop as he was presented as hard working which I can relate with.

5. Watch the trailers for the five films highlighted as examples of gay/lesbian representation in mainstream film. How are LGBT identities constructed in the trailers and how are audiences encouraged to respond to these representations?

Wilde:
This trailer showed a character from the past who was in discreet gay relationship. One of men said he wanted to reveal their love and wanted other people to know about it but they knew the consequence of doing this. Once it came to everyone's understanding about their situation, the men were being targeted by most (if not all) of the characters in the film and one of them was going to prison it seemed. It could be suggested that this was a way of punishing the men for their beliefs. It's fair to say society didn't agree with them being gay and it could be argued that the audience are supposed to be sympathetic for the characters as their story is being told so we could build a personal relationship with the characters (uses and gratification).

The Wedding Banquet:
